"Philosophy for Children" helps overcome the challenges of modern world

On October 13–25 2014 a series of educational events, with the participation of one of the world’s leading scientists in the field of pedagogy and ethics, professor of the Kyonsan National University Dzhinvan Park (South Korea) was held in the leading educational institutions of Ukraine in the framework of the international project «Education for Democracy».

The visit of the Professor Dzhinvan Park became possible thanks to the support of the international Risk Reduction Foundation. «If we want to turn Ukraine into a country with a high standard of quality of life, competitiveness and innovation, the education and research should be a priority for public policy, and familiarization with international experience will help to implement the most innovative approaches in learning. Education should be the most efficient use of time for young people, to prepare the young generation for the challenges of our time», said the head of the Risk Reduction Foundation Vladimir Kosterin.

The aim of the lectures and seminars was to introduce expert environment, civil officers, students and community leaders to the methodology P4C («Philosophy for Children»), which, according to many experts, has a major impact on the development of civil society and democracy.

The program «Philosophy for Children» is designed so that students in the classes are transformed into a community of researchers, and it promotes the integration of the child into society through cognitive, emotional and social communication very effectively. «Philosophy for Children» is not only an educational project that encourages children to reflective thinking from an early age, but also an effective way to prepare the next generation of people to the threats and challenges of the globalized world.

On October 13 at the Institute of Pedagogy of NAS of Ukraine and the Institute of Philosophy of Education and Science of National Pedagogical Dragomanov University a scientific seminar «Education for Democracy: P4C technique» was held, which was attended by teachers from many regions of Ukraine. Dzhinvan Park said that today many countries are in a real revolution in education, rapidly changing their curricula, and Ukraine should also think about it. Indeed, today the technique Р4С is actively promoted and implemented in more than 60 countries, and in many European countries, in particular Austria and is supported at the state level.

On October 14 Dzhinvan Park conducted practical workshop with the children in the Humanities Lyceum of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv. He noted in particular that 50 years ago the economy, and the political situation in South Korea were worse than in Ukraine. But the Koreans have relied on education and achieved outstanding results in all areas of public life. «History of Korea — is the history of Korean teachers. Ukrainian situation is very similar. If you work hard, you will save your country», said Dzhinvan Park.

On October 15 Dzhinvan Park presented the program «Philosophy for Children» at the University of Economics and Law «Krok», and at the Academy of Internal Affairs. He told the audience that his colleagues at the University of Computer Sciences have thrown out all their old books. «They throw them away each year because these books are no longer relevant. Things change very quickly. To educate knowledge is easy, to educate how to think is hard, but to educate the art of judgment is even harder», — said Dzhinvan Park.

Professor Dzhinvan Park also said that recently he had the opportunity to talk with the ambassador of South Korea in Ukraine on a number of pressing issues. «I specifically asked the Ambassador about the future of Ukraine, and he said that Ukraine in the next 5 years could become one of the strongest countries in Europe, because it has a powerful moral potential», said Dzhinvan Park.

Dzhinvan Park — Ph. D., Professor, Head of the Department of Ethics in Kyonsan National University, Vice-President of the International Council on «Philosophy for Children» (2009–2011), President of the international organization «Philosophy for Children in Asia and Oceania», President of the Korean Academy of Educating philosophy at schools, a member of the International Society «philosophical education in Asia and Oceania on the development of democracy» (UNESCO).
