Gunter Pauli: "I hope only for our children, youth, students!"

On February 15, 2012 in Business School of International Management Instiute (MIM-Kyiv) presentation of the book of world-renowned scientist, a member of the Club of Rome Gunter Pauli «Blue Economy: 10 Years, 100 Innovations, 100 million jobs» was held. Visit of Gunter Pauli was paid at the invitation of Ukrainian scientist and member of the Club of Rome Bogdan Hawrylyshyn, under the auspices of the Risk Reduction Foundation (head of the foundation — Vladimir Kosterin). We live in very difficult time, and the realities of the world force us to radically change the way we are thinking. Already today, to feed humanity, we need to create millions of new jobs and not through grants or subsidies, but through the new economic approaches. On the other hand, human impact on the environment has reached the critical limit, after which the eco-system is incapable of self-recovery

New economic model, called «Blue Economy» must cope with modern challenges. «We are recent arrivals on this earth and we are just learning how to live properly. We harm Earth, because we want it. We have to change our thinking! We must choose the best! One day my little son asked me to teach him how to shoot a gun. But I showed him that he can hunt with a falcon, and he immediately forgot about the gun «- on a simple example Gunter Pauli explained what he means under «rethink» and how easy it is to deal with the younger generation. Gunter Pauli told how he realized from his own experience the limited prospects of «green economy» and finally gave up probably the most environmental company. In 1991 he bought a bankrupt perfume company and created the most powerful ecological factory in the western world that produced bio soap from palm oil. On one hand, the plant was a completely closed production cycle, zero harmful emissions into the environment (director even paid his employees 50 cents for each kilometer which they overcame to work on a bike!), and on the other it was holding decent competition with such a giant in this industry as «Procter & Gamble». «But despite all these environmental innovations, the main problem remained unresolved — we were destroying palm forests! Then I realized that I need to radically change the business model! And therefore to change the thinking, look where nobody turns his head «- said Gunter Pauli. Thus Gunter Pauli realized that only «Blue Economy» is the best and cheapest economic model of the third millennium: it generates competitiveness, finds new business approaches, creats new jobs. It adds rather than takes away, returnes economy back on the track of evolutionary development.

For followers of «Blue Economy», nature is the best assistant and adviser! Why bird likes to sit on the zebra? Because thanks to black and white striped zebra costume she gets free ventilation (of course zebra too). Using this law of physics, a building in Japan was built, where in summer it is by 5 degrees cooler than in other buildings, without any insulation and air conditioning. Having examined the termites, which are characterized by precise control of input and output of air, architects used these «tips» of nature during the construction of Laggarberg school in Timra in northern Sweden. They managed to raise the temperature by 8 degrees during cold winters without any energy resources, and thanks to intelligent natural airing, children in this school were considered almost the healthiest in Sweden. If earlier the Swedish government had to pay extra money to people to settle in Timra, then during the previous year, more than 300 people moved there voluntarily. Within a short time 42 innovative business companies operating in line of the «Blue Economy» were created.

Or let’s take a look at the bamboo, billion people live in its forests. It’s no secret that bamboo has long been considered an excellent building material. But Gunter Pauli with his associates had to provide more than 10,000 pages of documentary evidence to convince the German engineers and architects to build a building of it, that would withstand millions of visitors. But when it happened, the German specialists were amazed. «This is — a masterpiece!» — They said. Moreover, the team of Pauli taught Colombians, many of which were completely illiterate, to build gorgeous private houses of bamboo. Moreover, the cost of a spacious two-story house with a large balcony reached only 2.2 thousand dollars! «Ukrainians should not go for bamboo — different climate here. Do not imitate, seek for your own options and solutions.

For example, wind energy has now become very fashionable, but there are many rivers in Ukraine and the water that flows at a speed of 15 km / h. generates as much energy as wind would generate with fantastic speed of 380 km / h! — Said Gunter Pauli. — Imagine, a small country Bhutan produces 10 gigawatts of electricity. It is incredible that Bhutan achieved these impressive results with no dams, because their religion does not allow them to «mock» on the water. It amazes me! " Speaking of waste, which mankind accumulates more and more with every year, we should be inspired with the experience of South Korea. They learned how to effectively convert waste into biogas, and it allows to reduce taxes for the population by 30%. «Why no one has still not done this in Ukraine, considering your constant gas problems with Russia? If after three years you will not do this, then there was no sense for me to come to you today»- said Gunter Pauli.

Currently, more and more countries start to think in new ways, in the context of the «Blue Economy». For example, recently China cultivated 34% of world cotton but decided to give it up completely, and to use freed land for food production. Instead of this, they will make wear from…algae, which previously they were forced to destroy — about 20 million tons each year. Along with producing clothing from algae (by the way, nice looking and high quality!) thousands of new jobs will be created! «We just do not see endless opportunities that are all around us! Imagine, every week we have a new innovation! The economy, in fact, can be turned around! A team of scientists, researchers, innovators in Ukraine should scan all possibilities — it must be dozens, hundreds of ideas — and start to implement them! The young people will have jobs that their parents could not even imagine, «- said Pauli. When asked, whether he would present his book to the Ukrainian authorities, government officials, Gunter Pauli replied: «I have met with more then 100 heads of the countries in the world, and as result - zero, they left only photograhs in my memory. Therefore I rely only on children, young people, students - only they can change the rules of the game."
